Switch from Google’s Jira app
Already using the Jira app for Google Chat? Moving a space to Herald takes a few minutes, and you can run both side by side until you’re happy.
What changes
| In Google’s Jira app | In Herald |
|---|---|
| Add the Jira bot to a space and connect your Atlassian account | Paste the space’s webhook into Herald once. No bot, no sign-in in Chat, no cookie or security settings |
Space subscriptions per project (/jira_subscriptions) | A connection per space, with projects, issue types, priorities, labels, components, custom fields, status changes and JQL |
| Set up by people in the space | Set up by Jira administrators, or by project administrators for their own project |
| Personal notifications in a direct message | Not available yet. Herald posts to spaces. Tip: a space per person or team with a JQL filter such as assignee = "Jane Doe" covers many cases |
| No way to see what was sent or why something failed | A delivery log and health badge per connection, and an email when a space stops receiving |
1. Note what each space receives today
In each space that gets Jira updates, type /jira_subscriptions. Write down, or take a screenshot of, the projects and filters it lists. You’ll recreate them in Herald.
2. Install Herald in Jira
A Jira administrator installs Herald from the Atlassian Marketplace. It’s free for sites with up to 10 users; larger sites get a 30-day free trial. Herald appears under Settings → Apps.
3. Add a webhook to the space
- In Google Chat, open the space and click its name at the top.
- Choose Apps & integrations → Webhooks → Add webhook.
- Name it Herald and save. Optionally use
https://senyilabs.com/herald/avatar.pngas the avatar. - Copy the webhook URL. Treat it like a password.
Don’t see Webhooks? Your Workspace admin needs to allow incoming webhooks; see Requirements.
4. Create the matching connection in Herald
- In Jira, open Settings → Apps → Herald and click Add connection.
- Give it the space’s name and paste the webhook URL.
- Pick the same projects you noted in step 1, then the events you want. Add filters if the old subscription had them.
- Save. Herald posts a test message to the space straight away.
5. Remove Google’s app from the space
Click the space’s name → Apps & integrations → Apps, then remove Jira from the space. This deletes that app’s settings for the space; Herald’s connection is not affected.
Repeat steps 1, 3, 4 and 5 for every space.
6. Optional: uninstall Google’s app from Jira
Once no space and nobody’s personal notifications depend on it, a Jira administrator can uninstall Google’s Chat app under Settings → Apps → Manage apps. Herald works independently, so you can also leave it installed.
