Jira app for Google Chat not working? Fixes that help
Google’s Jira app for Google Chat is free and handy when it works. When it doesn’t, the error messages rarely say why. These are the fixes that most often help, roughly in the order to try them.
1. Check that both parts are installed
The integration has two halves, and both must be in place:
- the Jira app in Google Chat, added to the space or opened as a direct message, and
- the Google Chat for Jira Cloud app in Jira, installed by a Jira administrator from the Atlassian Marketplace.
If only the Chat side is there, connecting fails at the last step. A Jira administrator can check under Settings → Apps → Manage apps.
2. Check that your Workspace admin allows Chat apps
In many companies, Google Workspace admins limit which Chat apps people may install. If the app doesn’t appear when you search for it in Chat, or the @Jira bot never shows up in a space, ask your Workspace admin to allow it in the Google Admin console.
3. Allow cookies for your Atlassian site while connecting
Connecting opens a sign-in window for your Atlassian site. Browsers that block third-party cookies can break this step, which often shows up as an endless “Loading…” or a generic error. Allow cookies for atlassian.net and atlassian.com, or try connecting from another browser, then connect again.
4. Save the settings again
Several people report that messages started arriving again after this: type /jira_settings in the space or in your direct message with the app, click Edit settings, change nothing and click Save.
5. Disconnect and connect again
- Type
/jira_disconnectin your direct message with the app. - Type
/jira_connectand sign in to your Atlassian site again. - If a space still gets nothing, remove the Jira app from the space (click the space name → Apps & integrations) and add it again.
6. No messages in a space? Check its subscriptions
A space only gets updates for the projects it is subscribed to. Type /jira_subscriptions in the space to see and change them. Personal notifications (issues you’re assigned to, watch or are mentioned in) are set separately with /jira_settings.
7. Still stuck: send notifications without the bot
Most of the problems above come from the sign-in step that connects the bot to your Jira account. If what you need is Jira updates in a team space, you can skip the bot entirely: every Google Chat space can receive messages through an incoming webhook, a URL you paste into Jira once. No sign-in in Chat, no cookies.
- For one or two simple messages, a Jira Automation rule can post to that webhook.
- For many projects and spaces, filters, one thread per issue and alerts when something breaks, use Herald, our Marketplace app built on webhooks. It’s free for up to 10 users, and switching takes a few minutes per space.
